The Namtok Phliu National Park covers an area of 134.5 square kilometers along forestland at Khao Sa Bap mountain range. The 3-level Phliu waterfall features a basin of cool, clear water for splashing around and plenty of large fish in the streams.
The Pliew Waterfall is a popular picnic spot where locals come to feed ‘pla phung’ or mad barbs. The fish likes raging streams. It normally eats seeds of chaulmoogra tree, but here people feed them long bean. The couple (inset) visit the waterfall every year. They bring with them boiled corn to feed the fish. The fall gushes from a height of 20 metres, forming small pools at the base, where there is a statute dedicated to King Rama V’s royal consort HM Queen Sunanda Kumariratana, and a pyramid the monarch got built as a monument of his love for the queen.
Visitors approach the entrance to the waterfall on foot and can buy some food for themselves and for the fish! As you take a leisurly walk to the waterfall visitors stop to relax by the streams and feed the fish. Nearby are a laterite chedi and stupa shaped like a pyramid built by King Rama V as a loving memorial to Phra Nang Chao Sunanthakumarirat, his first consort, who died in a boat accident.
There are two other waterfalls in the park. The Khlong Narai waterfall, about 6 kilometers from town via Highway No. 3 at a right turn at Km. 338-339 and two kilometers further away on foot. The Trok Nong waterfall is off Highway No. 3277 (Khlung-Makham route) with a left turn at Trok Nong market and a further 2 kilometers on foot.
